Are you feeling more stressed these days? Are your kids showing signs of stress or anxiety? Do something good for your mental health by adding mindfulness into your daily routines.

What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment in order to bring more peace and focus to your life.

Facts about mindfulness: 

  1. Mindfulness doesn’t require a lot of work. We can incorporate mindfulness with simple practices that are proven to benefit our mental and physical health.
  2. Mindfulness is easy! Anyone can do it and benefit from it, adults and kids alike.
  3. Mindfulness is a way of life.  Mindfulness can bring awareness and calm into every part of our lives and cut down stress. A few minutes a day is all it takes.
  4. Mindfulness is evidence-based. Science has documented its benefits on our health, happiness, and relationships.

Here are some simple ideas to do with your kids. 

  • STOP and be mindful: Teach the basics of mindfulness with the acronym STOP – Stop • Take a deep breath. • Observe • Proceed
  • Take 5: Name
    • 5 things you can see.
    • 4 things you can feel.
    • 3 things you can hear.
    • 2 things you can smell.
    • 1 thing you can taste.
  • Raisin meditation: Close your eyes and put a raisin (or a cracker, or a candy) in your mouth. Practice using all of your senses to think about that raisin – what it tastes like, what it smells like, what it looks like, how it feels in your mouth, and what it sounds like when you chew it.
  • Use all of your senses: Be in the moment. Make your busy brain stop the spinning and focus on what’s around you.

  • Other mindfulness strategies: Art, crafting, music, yoga, dance, walking in nature – there are lots of different ways you can help de-stress your kids and help them to focus on the moment. Be creative!

Take your mindfulness outside! 

With all that is going on in our world right now, we encourage everyone to be sure to take time to unplug from your devices and daily stresses by taking your mindfulness outside! There are plenty of beautiful days ahead of us. Fresh air and physical activity can actual energize you and improve your mood, focus and creativity. Focus on what you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste, or try some of these other ideas:
